Scoliosis is a daunting health condition that results in curvature in the spine, with most cases presenting mild or severe symptoms. It begins to show during a growth spurt right before puberty kicks in. Fortunately, acupressure points for scoliosis is a practice that offers plenty of benefits.

In this article, I’ve compiled a list of the top five acupuncture points for scoliosis pain that will help improve your way of living with the condition.

Is Acupuncture Good For Scoliosis?

Over the years, studies have shown successful progress in the development of acupuncture effects and its overall health benefits. Among the several conditions such as asthma, brain health, and bone health, it can also treat scoliosis.

In a blind-controlled pilot study, medical professionals concluded that acupuncture positively influences scoliosis patients with curvatures of less than 35 degrees. Other clinical trials propose a successful alternative to conventional medical treatment. Not only will acupuncture help with scoliosis pain control, but it can help alleviate curvature progression over time for patients with curvatures resulting from degenerative scoliosis.

So the big question is, can acupuncture help scoliosis while enhancing your quality of life? The short answer is yes. Keep reading for a helpful list of the best pressure points to treat scoliosis and how it can improve your daily life.

Acupoint: SI-3 (Other Names: Small Intestine-3/Hou Xi/Back Stream)

Also known as the Back Stream pressure point, SI-3 is a small intestine acupoint located in your hand. Not only can it help with naturally shrinking the abdomen and straightening the spine, but it is known as one of the acupressure points to reduce arm fat. It is in an awkward spot and can only be found after you ball your hand into a fist.

Form a fist with your fingers facing upwards. Your fist will create a crease at the side of your palm next to the pinky finger. You’ll notice a slight bulge in the crease, and this is where SI-3 sits. Apply pressure at any time to treat your scoliosis condition.

Acupoint: Ren-17 (Other Names: The Conception Vessel-17/Shan Zhong/Middle of the Chest)

Ren-17 is likely one of the most critical pressure points in the upper human body. It plays a pivotal role as the front support for deformity of scoliosis patients and enables you to walk more steadily. It is essential to keep your head up and avoid carrying heavy objects.

Additionally, Ren-17 is known to be one of the acupressure points to increase estrogen. Ren-17 is known as the “Middle of the Chest” simply because it is located at the center point of your chest, making it relatively easy to find.

Acupoint: GV-4 (Other Names: The Governing Vessel-4/Ming Men/Life Gate)

With scoliosis, you’re forced into a sedentary lifestyle which puts pressure on the intervertebral disc, forcing the lumbar spine to bend forward. Ultimately, this causes the intervertebral disc to degenerate over time, worsening scoliosis.

While GV-4 can help treat chronic pain in the spine, it is also one of the best acupressure points for lower back pain. It has rightfully earned its popular name as the Life Gate pressure point, serving several other purposes such as alleviating diarrhea, menstruation, and fertility, to name a few.

You can locate GV-4 in the middle of the spine behind your belly button, specifically between the L2 and L3 vertebrae. To stimulate this pressure point, apply firm pressure for a few seconds.

Acupoint: KI-1 (Other Names: Kidney-1/Yong Quan/Gushing Spring)

Also known as Gushing Spring, the KI-1 pressure point is excellent for reducing chronic pain in the spine. It is common for patients with scoliosis to have flat feet. This imbalance can cause the pelvis to tilt, which undoubtedly can cause scoliosis.

This pressure point helps improve the length of your foot while protecting the arch. Stimulating this pressure point will prevent your forefoot arch from collapsing. Additionally, KI-1 is one of the best acupressure points for seborrheic dermatitis.

To locate KI-1, flex your foot so that your toes are pointing to the sky. Find the depression about a quarter of the way down from the base of your toes. Apply light pressure and begin to massage gently in a circular motion.

Acupoint: M-BW-35 (Other Names: /Hua Tuo Jia Ji/Hua Tuo Spine Ridge Edges)

Pressure point M-BW-35 is a cluster of 34 pressure points that run along the spine. This group of pressure points is split into two sides with 17 acupoints on each side from the first thoracic vertebrae down to the fifth lumbar vertebrae.

For the best experience, lie on your stomach and have someone gently massage the pressure points using their thumbs for about 30 seconds. Frequent massages help promote blood flow in the lower back while improving muscle tension and overall strength.

Additionally, this group of pressure points strengthens the connection between your muscular and skeletal systems. Without a doubt, M-BW-35 are great acupuncture points for scoliosis pain relief.
